Pablo Picasso; Artistic Genius

If you picked a random person off the street and asked them to name an artist, a common answer would be Pablo Picasso. All artists dream of having the same success as Picasso. He has museums and exhibits designated just for his artwork in every corner of the world, from the New York Metropolitan Museum, to the Haifa Museum in Israel, and to, of course, dozens of exhibits in his home country, Spain, including a Museum in Malaga, his city of birth.

Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 and was painting by the time he was eight years old. He finished his first masterpiece by the time was nine.

During his lifetime Picasso explored many diverse techniques of painting. He used different colors, unusual subjects, and varied his artistic style. He went through “periods” where he concentrated his style within a broader criterion.

At the Museo Picasso in Malaga (http://www2.museopicassomalaga.org/i_home.cfm) you can explore all of these different periods and view the differences that occurred in each phase. Each era also created its own reactions and opinions by the general viewers. “We like the rose period, the classical period, the blue period, and the cubism period in the first years of the 20th century, but we believe that after the second world war a lot of [Picasso`s] work did not have the same quality…”, Federico Romero Calderon and his wife, Maria Romero Calderon, say about the variation in Picasso´s work.

Being residents of Malaga, and containing artistic backgrounds themselves, Federico and Maria Romero Calderon have been to the Museo Picasso of Malaga multiple times. They have also been to several other museums devoted to Picasso, and to museums with exhibits dedicated to his work. Overall, their favorite painting is “Portrait of Olga Koklowa” in the Museo Picasso of Malaga because “the coloring is beautiful and the intensity of the subject in the picture is incredible.”

Olga Koklowa is one of Picasso´s many wives. Picasso has always been a controversial subject surrounding his love life, many say he was disrespectful to women, and the Romero´s agree. “Picasso was an artistic genius. But, he failed in his love life and family. Like many other artists, if there is genius there is ego.”
Picasso has certainly made his place in history. As an artist, he changed the way that people saw his paintings. He created new methods and discovered his own artistic style. His world renowned work will remain popular for the years to come. Picasso will always remain a pivotal person in history, affecting not just the art world.
